Current News

We've had some drama and are currently doing some internal housekeeping and rewriting here on Gypsy Magic.

It's going to take a while to get things set right here and I am really sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. I apologize for links to a "page not found" instead of something cool and magickal.

Snow Queen Water

Gather handfuls of fresh clean snow from the first snowfall of the season, or break off the first icicle you see. Place it in a clean glass bowl and let it melt. Add holly leaves and let this water sit overnight - exposed to northern moonbeams if possible. Wash your face with the water for enhanced youth and beauty.

Greeting Cards

The sending of cards is a fairly modern tradition, and used to be only for people that you would not be actually seeing. It was considered polite to give your greetings in person, whenever you could. However, today clever marketing from the manufacturers means that we tend to send cards to everyone, even when they live in the same house.

Whether you celebrate Yule, Christmas or another festival in December, you will probably be sending greeting cards. If you do this now then not only do you save a panic later, but also you will have the time to do a bit more than just scrawl your name. For those people with whom you are not in regular contact, try writing a few lines telling them what's happening in your world at present. You could also enclose a small token, perhaps a pressed flower, to bring them cheer. Of course if you have the time it can be nice to make your own cards, and there are kits which can be bought to help with this.

For special people make your card into a spell for them. Decorate it with flowers or other plants which will bring them good fortune, like Fern, Oak, Holly, Poppy, Rose petals, or Violet. Alternatively, select plants for harmony, like Lavender, Passion Flower and Gardenia.

So get out your address book, dust off your memory and write your cards, now, before the festive season gets fully under way. You'll thank yourself for it later! And don't forget to have a few cards over, just in case there's someone you forget.

Stir Up Sunday

Themes: Religious devotion, Home, Wishes, Manifestation, Kinship, Unity, Beginnings
Symbols: Fire (ovens), Sparks
Presiding Goddess: Hestia

About Hestia: The Greek goddess of household affairs, Hestia watches over our cookery today to help manifest family unity and ensure tasty outcomes. As a hearth goddess, she provides the spiritual energy necessary to keep our faith sure and the inner fires burning bright. Greek art did not try to portray this goddess, because she was considered the beginning - the source from which all else was ignited and set in motion.

To do Today: Getting its name from the annual Yule pudding making that takes place in many homes around this time of year, Stir Up Sunday is also a time in the Christian Church to motivate determined faith. So why not blend the best of both worlds? Invoke Hestia's blessing in your kitchen and make some pudding for the whole family (or a gathering of friends). Have each person present stir the pudding clockwise for a few minutes as they focus on a wish. By next year at this time, the wish should manifest.

Light a candle this morning to welcome Hestia's unity and energy into your home. Or, carry matches in your pocket so the spark of this goddess can ignite in any situation where it's needed. Throughout the day, when you need more commitment to your beliefs, just light one match to invoke Hestia's aid.

Needle Luck Magick

A needle that is accidentally dropped and then found poking upward foretells a visitor before the end of the day. The needle should be picked up and kept. As they say:

Find a pin, pick it up
And all day long you'll have good luck.

To extend your luck for longer than one day, place the needle in a vase of fresh water and fresh flowers. The essence of the flowers will energize the luck in the needle, and your luck will last longer than the flowers.

When the flowers die, discard them as usual, empty the water, and put the needle in your sewing kit as a reminder of your good luck.
