Feast of Sekhmet

In the Theban Recension of the Book of the Dead is found a Chapter (No. clvi.) which was composed for the purpose of bestowing upon the deceased some of the magical power of the goddess Isis. The Chapter was intended to be recited over an amulet called thet, made of carnelian, which had to be steeped in water of ankhami flowers, and set in a sycamore plinth, and if this were laid on the neck of a dead person it would place him under the protection of the words of power of Isis, and he would be able to go wheresoever he pleased in the Underworld....

Egyptian New Year

According to some calendars, August 1st is the Egyptian New Year. So if you'd like to rethink those New Year's Resolutions from back in January, or if you'd like to do some spells or rituals for the New Year but don't want to wait another four months, today is a golden opportunity.

The Courtship of Inanna and Damuzi

For the full Honey Moon, I thought it would be fun to post this amazing love poem from Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth.

The courtship of Inanna and Dumuzi is one of the oldest love poems from the ancient world. It is a story of love between the gods (although some argue that Dumuzi was a real person, who rose to power, and so attained mythical divine status). When the gods consummate their love the result is fedundity on earth, particularly for their worshippers.

This Sumerian text is often compared to the Song of Songs. The Egyptian love poetry makes a better parallel, but there are some connections. However, this is much more explicitly sexual than the Song, and, of course, it is about divine lovers.

The Festival Of Bast

According to many pagan calendars, April 15 was the annual festival of Bast. This was Egypt's most popular festival. A precursor of modern mardi Gras, it was renowned for parties, revelry, and drunkenness. The Festival of Navigation

The Festival of Navigation (Navigium Isidis) was an ancient Roman festival that celebrated Isis as the ruler over safe navigation, boats, fishing, and the final journey of life. At this festival, after an elaborate parade, a Ship of Isis filled with great offerings of incense, flowers, libations and small shrines was sent out to sea.

Night of a Teardrop
