Current News

I am currently in the process of migrating the content shared here to a series of new websites hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com.

As you explore this site, you may find links to a "page not found" instead of something cool and magickal. For this I apologize. I am very working hard behind the scenes to restore those pages along with a link to their homes on my new website where they can be viewed in full.

Celebrate the Wind Moon

In April, the thunderstorms of March are beginning to subside, and the wind picks up. Seeds are being blown about on the breezes, spreading life all around from one place to the next. In fact, this month's full moon is the aptly named Wind Moon, although in some traditions this lunar cycle is often known as the Seed Moon....

An Oestara Ritual

The main points of Oestara are those of balance and of spring.

This ritual is best performed outdoors. In advance you will need to collect a small handful of old leaves and write on each something that you would like to be rid of. Also take a small number of seeds or seedlings (if these seedlings come from the seeds you planted at Imbolg, so much the better), one for each new thing that you wish to attain.

Silently ask the elements, the Goddess and the God to be with you, then when you are ready, dig a hole large enough to give space to the seedlings...

A Ritual for Ostara

For this ritual, you'll want to decorate your altar with symbols of the season. Think about all the colors you see in nature at this time of year -- bright daffodils, crocuses, plump tulips, green shoots -- and incorporate them into your altar. This is also a time of fertility in the natural world -- the egg is the perfect representation of this aspect of the season. Symbols of young animals such as lambs, chicks, and calves are also great altar adornments for Ostara.

In addition, you'll need the following:
  • Three candles -- one yellow, one green, and one purple
  • A bowl of milk
  • A small bowl of honey or sugar
Perform this ritual outside if at all possible, in the early morning as the sun rises. It's spring, so it may be a bit chilly, but it's a good time to reconnect with the earth. If your tradition normally requires you to cast a circle, do so now....

Spell for the Solar Eclipse

Today, we have a total solar eclipse that occurs over Southeast Asia and the western Pacific. This will be the longest eclipse of the twenty-first century, with totality occurring for 6 minutes and 39 seconds. Today is a prime time for magic, as eclipses are rare and wondrous events. Some see the eclipse as a time when the Sun god and the Moon goddess are embracing. It’s a great opportunity to work with the balance of masculine and feminine energies.

Even if you live in a part of the world where the Moon’s shadow doesn’t fall during this eclipse, you can still work magic for new opportunities and to bring change into your life. Light a white candle for the Sun god and a black one for the Moon goddess....

Egyptian New Year

According to some calendars, August 1st is the Egyptian New Year. So if you'd like to rethink those New Year's Resolutions from back in January, or if you'd like to do some spells or rituals for the New Year but don't want to wait another four months, today is a golden opportunity.

"Wipe the slate clean
dream a new dream."

With a little bit of imagination, the above quote can be used to create a spell for new beginnings. Here's an example. You will need a small chalkboard or dry erase board, or a piece of paper, a pencil, and an appropriate eraser....

Gypsy Good Luck Invocation

The first day of any month offers fresh hopes and new beginnings. One good-luck invocation is to say "Rabbits" before any other word on the first of the month.

Some say "White rabbits" three times as the last spoken words on the eve of the new month...

An Ablution for the New Year

New time demands new spirit; this purification is required: prepare a basin of snow, or of clear water iced, and scatter over it earth dried in the sun to a fine dust. The hands should then be immersed and chilled, the brow anointed and cooled, and these words said:

Substance wasted,
substance spoiled ...

Rebirth

In lighting the fires, in stringing the lights, we do more than stave off the darkness, even more than honor the sun. We also stand with fierce courage to say to the darkness, "You may come this far but no further!" We have given the darkness its due, we have watched it leach the light from our lives for as long as we had to; now the long night is over, we can tentatively bring our own lights back from hiding, and let the new days begin...

New Beginnings

For this spell, you need:
  • 1 amethyst cluster
  • 2 crystal points
  • 1 bag of sea salt
  • Black Bag
  • Black votive candle in candle holder and matches
  • Candy or something sweet to eat
You can make a new start any time, but some times are better than others. When the moon is new, she lends her energy to new beginnings.

The first month of the New Year is also a wonderful time to have a new beginning....
