Current News

I am currently in the process of migrating the content shared here to a series of new websites hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com.

As you explore this site, you may find links to a "page not found" instead of something cool and magickal. For this I apologize. I am very working hard behind the scenes to restore those pages along with a link to their homes on my new website where they can be viewed in full.

The Chant of the Year

The following is of archaic Celtic origin. On the surface it is a triple recital of the thirteen months of the lunar year. Each word, however, is the name of one of the sacred trees, which in turn each have deep philosophical and magickal implications. Additionally, the thirteen, taken in sequence, tell in rich detail the life of the Sacred King and the archaic Legend of the Goddess.

All Witches should know or be strongly encouraged to study and research the hidden meanings behind this, working from the material provided by the poet Robert Graves (The White Goddess) .

Very powerful when done as a group, this chant can be done by the solitary practitioner as well. Provided here are the instructions for a group ritual, which can then be adjusted to suit an individual practice....

Powerful Egyptian Healing Chant

The ancient Egyptians used this powerful meditation to infuse their bodies with light. Each body part was dedicated to a divinity who directed the flow of life energy. This meditation may be recited upon waking while standing in an eastern window facing the sun, or before sleeping while lying in repose. After deep relaxation, begin naming the parts of your body that you dedicate to the Divine:

My head is the head of Seshat,
filling with thoughts of the power of the Divine, remembering my soul's purpose.

My face is the face of Nefertum,
the golden child arising above chaos in beauty....

The Coven Spell

We chant the coven spell, thus shall it be!

Healing Mantras Romany Style

Here are five simple mantra style Romany chants for vitality and good health. These are enhanced when done on a Sunday. Light a candle and some incense, (pine is a good choice) and then spend 10 minutes chanting one of the following mantras...

Mantra - Sound carrying Thought

The term mantra should be familiar to most readers. It is usually associated with sounds or words that when spoken or sung, evoke a particular magical power or energy. Two of the best-known mantras are AUM or Om, The term mantra is derived from the sanskrit root "man", which means, 'to think'. Thus the uttered sound is merely an aid to the focusing and direction of thought, and initiates of Tantrika regard the different types of mantra as vehicles for articulating spiritual energy as sound....

Primal Poetry - Sacred Speech

Just for the purposes of discussion, I want to distinguish between 'ordinary' speaking and 'sacred' speech. Sacred speech, in this context, refers to those occasions when we are using speech (probably combined with other modes of display) to bring about a magical change - such as in inducing group trance, communing with spirits, being a horse, raising energy, and so on....

Why Chanting Works

Why does singing and chanting have such a powerful effect on us? Repetitive or boring tasks are easier to perform if there is a tune in the background, or if someone starts to sing.

I remember with particular fondness the "work songs" which were evolved when I spent a few months picking oranges and grapefruit in Israel, and they certainly livened up what was a boring and strenuous task. Songs and chants establish rhythms, which not only distract from the boredom of a task, but also seem to add energy and help "carry" each person along....

Soundscapes

You can use soundscapes to evoke and exaggerate moods, and develop group-grown chants for rituals and spell-casting.

The idea of Soundscapes is for the group to explore how to use words, tones and sound patterns to build up a "picture" - creating the atmosphere appropriate to the chosen theme.

My favourite example of a vocal Soundscape is one produced by an experimental drama group, when asked to express the theme of "Sweets"....

Shouting Out To The God

Here, one member of the group makes up a sound, call or statement and shouts it out, and the rest of the group shout it back at them. This can be especially effective as a kind of freeform invocation, for example, if everyone is familiar with the qualities, attributes and features of a particular God or Goddess. It can also be used as light-hearted introduction to designing invocations.

This form of repetition is commonly used in tantrik ritual, as salutations given to the god who is the object of the ritual. The example below is just a few of the 108 ritual salutations to the god Ganesha:

Group Aum for Peace and Centering

This is a simple group exercise. All sit in a circle, with eyes closed. After taking a few deep breaths, begin a long drawn out A-U-M (OM) chant. It need not be synchronized, and is very effective in relaxing people....

Spinning Mantra Chant for Power

In the most commonly used form of chants, each member of the group repeats the entire verse. However, the "Spinning Mantra" differs in that one member intones the first line of the chant, the next person, the second line, and so on. One note can be used throughout, with the same syllables stressed in each line.

The Witch's Tune

This is another version of the Witch's Rune, called the witch's tune. The words were adapted by Aldan.

Dark of night and rising moon,
East, then south, then west, then north
To each we sing a witches' tune
That calls the ancient powers forth....

Witch's Rune Traditional

Group Chants

Group Chants are one of the most effective (and fun!) ways of raising energy, especially when combined with dancing, stylized movement, gestures, and swaying. Some of the most popular chants are those taken from Amerindian sources, such as:

I am the Circle,
I am Healing you,
You are the Circle
You are healing me...
