Current News

I am currently in the process of migrating the content shared here to a series of new websites hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com.

As you explore this site, you may find links to a "page not found" instead of something cool and magickal. For this I apologize. I am very working hard behind the scenes to restore those pages along with a link to their homes on my new website where they can be viewed in full.

Gypsy Names

Each gypsy had three names:

The first was a secret name whispered into the baby's ear shortly after birth and again when the child reached puberty but never spoken aloud at any other time and never told to anyone else.

The second was a gypsy name, used between gypsies only....

... I am so sorry but this post has been moved to my new website, Gypsy Magick and Lore, and can be found in its entirety here: Gypsy Names

I have a question, and I can't find it in any of my books anywhere. What does it mean when you have the phantom smell of roses when there are none. And does the conversation you are having at the time mean anything to the smell or the smell anything to the meaning?

Shirley Twofeathers said...

In general, Roses are happy omens - indicative of health, joy, happiness, budding relationships.

Scents and smells give us hints. They allow us to sense the "flavor" of an idea or a situation. The scent of a rose could mean a blessing on the conversation or a blessing on the content of the conversation.

It is also possible that the conversation or events surrounding the conversation may have triggered a previous life memory, or brought a loving spirit helper into the environment.

Without knowing more about the situation, this is about as helpful as I can be.

My family comes from a long line of gypsies. I knew I was always different. My grandmother told me she couldn't tell me my name that it had to be another gypsy. I just feel like I almost don't have an identity. I know this might sound silly but I'm simply trying to find my way. I hope that you can help me.Thanks

I don't know if I can help you find your way, Esmeralda... but you are certainly welcome here.

My name is Jenenne and I understand. You are blessed with having a grandmother to help you. My grandmother refuses to claim her gypsy heritage. Thank the heavens for great aunts! I was at a loss for identity until my soul gave me my name and gypsy journey blessed me with tribal vision. The site is also a blessing. We are not alone:)

I have always liked what is considered typical "gypsy" stuff, I bellydance, love long skirts, a pretty peice of glass or a coin has always caught my eye. I have dable in magic and a meditaion, candles and charms. But none of my immidiate family is into anything like this. None of my friends either. But about 4 years ago i find out that my grand father isnt my real grandfather. and that my real grandfather was a gypsy, and my grandmother and him only were together long enough to have my mother, and i guess he left...

Then i went snooping through some of my mothers old stuff and found a picture of a a peteite beautiful woman. Looking at the picture i found alot of similarities between us. I think she maybe be my great grand mother.

Is there anyway to trace this back...i would really like to know more about this part of my family. No one will talk about it. It is kept extremely hush hush.

My family history is very vague. I suppose, like a lot of others, they wanted to blend in and be like everyone else.
I don't know if we could be Gypsy/Rom or not. But I do have a question. I have a copy of Ray Buckland's Chant-o-matics and one of his chants for "respect and admiration" is gayoset. This is VERY close in sound to our old family name. I have searched online for the word and nothing turns up.
First, do you know what the word means?
And second, where did it come from?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I don't know my past...is it possible for a non-gypsy to become a gypsy?

My question involves gypsy magic. I am a decendent of an ancient gypsy line, and I have always wondered, would gypsies be considered wizards, warlocks, or a type of priest, in regards to their magic? Any help on this would be appreciated.

Gypsy magick is more of a hedge witch, kitchen magick sort of thing. I wouldn't expect a Gypsy Witch to be called a sorcerer, wizard, high priestess, or anything like that.

To those who are feeling lost orwondering how to find the truth or your path...You know, sometimes you just have to trust your heart and follow your feeling, regardless of historical facts or truths. Many of us today are living with disconnections from our past and heritage, and most of us are of mixed blood. Those things should not keep us from having a cultural or spiritual identity. I myself am not Rom. Some of my family were and are Irish Gypsies, which is not the same. Howeverwe do share many cultural ties, associations and similarities with the Rom, as Gypsies. If you do a bit of research you'll find there are over a hundred different cultural groups throughout the world that are identified as Gypsy. So if you feel you are Gypsy...then be Gypsy, even if you are alone. Study and learn what you can, embrace what seems right and don't worry too much about the rest. Be open to finding similar souls, but my advice is if you are not Rom by blood or heritage then look into some of the other Gypsy groups, where you might be more readily accepted and feel more comfortable.

"would gypsies be considered wizards, warlocks, or a type of priest, in regards to their magic?"

I think we share a lot in common with South American Shamans, who are called Sorcerers, and who are aware of and in tune with spirit entities which arise from plant, mineral, animal, and general "wild" nature.

We also are steeped in "fortune telling" or divination so I found this interesting:
"A sorcerer is etymologically a drawer of ‘lots’ – for the word comes ultimately from Latin sors ‘lot’ (source also of English sort). The plural sortēs was used for the ‘responses made by oracles’, and this formed the basis of the Vulgar Latin noun *sortārius ‘priest of the oracle’, hence ‘caster of spells’. It passed into English via Old French sorcier as sorser, which was later extended to sorcerer"

Also, some biblical references to Sorcery come from the greek 'pharmakeia', which refers to a potion maker, and we have a long association with that art as well.

So for myself, I identify with being a Srcerer when it comes to our particular type of magic.

Can a gypsy turn to a non-gypsy? Because I am a non-gypsy and my fiance is a gypsy. And i don't want to be part of a gypsy world.

I was wondering...If I might have Romani genetics. My family tree was traced back to India but I'm not sure that we were low caste Indians. Any way to know if we're part gypsy?

My wife and I will forever remain grateful to Dr Amber for his divine intervention in our lives. My wife and I fled from Burundi to Australia. We got to Australia and life was quite ok but we needed more funds to clear our bills. My wife did some research online to get help in winning the lottery and she got credible recommendations of Dr Amber who gives out lottery winning numbers with his magical spell. We got in touch with Dr Amber and he assured us that he can help us if only we believe in his work. We agreed to proceed with him and we bought one ticket in the Hospital Research Foundation Home lottery and played it just as Dr Amber instructed with the numbers he gave to us and within 5 days, we received the shock of a lifetime when we realized we've won a $3 million dollars house and $1 million dollars cash in the lottery. We want everyone to join us to appreciate Dr Amber. To know more, visit: amberlottotemple.com or call/text +18084815132 or email: amberlottotemple@gmail.com
