August Spells and Rituals

August, the eighth month of the year and the sixth month of the Roman calendar. The Romans called the month Sextilis, which means sixth. It became the eighth month when January and February were added to the year before March by King Numa Pompilius, who also gave it 29 days. Julius Caesar added two days when he created the Julian calendar giving it its modern length of 31 days. In 8 BC it was renamed in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar.

August 1 traditionally marked the beginning of the serious harvest. "After Lammas Day, corn ripens as much by night as by day." The Anglo-Saxons called it Weod monath, which means Weed month, because it is the month when weeds and other plants grow most rapidly.

This page serves as a jumping off point for August holy days, spells, magicks, lore, rituals, superstitions and more.
