Yuletide Greetings!

Also known as: Yule, Alban Arthuan, Winter Solstice marks the longest night of the year. It is from this point that the days begin slowly to become longer and longer. The sun is at its most southeastern point over the Tropic of Capricorn in the northern hemisphere and has no apparent northward or southward motion.

In the time of the ancient tribes this was a time of celebration, for it meant the turning point of winter and the eventual return of spring. Yule is the time when we honor the Goddess for giving birth to the sun once more. It is the time when the Oak King is victorious over the Holly King....

I am so sorry to do this to you, but this post has been enlarged and moved to my new website, The Pagan Calendar (hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com) and can be found in its entirety here: Yule

  1. Happy Yule to you!

I am so happy I found this site. I have recently uncovered a part of my families history through some old letters I found. I can not read them because they are in a foriegn language. They are from Czechoslovakia and are dated 1920.
My grandmother always told us she was an immigrant, but she never wanted to talk about from where. (we always suspected Russia.) She is very secretive. She always says live in the present my dear and never visit the past. LOL! When I brought these letters to her attention she revealed a little bit too me before she changed subjects. It turns out My grandmother's family name is Valagura. They were show people in Czechoslovakia (before it became an official country.) I won't tell all, but long story short, my entire paternal family tree are Romani gypsies! I always thought my grandmother was the coolest person in the world with her home made wine and remedies. Now, it's official she is the coolest.

It explains so much!! My sister and I have so many gypsy tendencies! I have always had the most abstract dreams that in some strange way come true. They didn't quite make sense until the event happened and then it was an aha moment. My mother and mother's family were always freaked out by that and we were told it was just coincidence when we were young and to dare not tell anyone or we would be made fun of. now that I am older, I know it's something more. I have always felt "something." I do not have these dreams all the time or anything but They do occur.

My father (which I didn't see much, rest his soul) and I have always been able to pick up an instrument and "figure it out" relatively quickly. My sister's heart beat is dependant on music. We taught ourselves to read music. My father, sister, and I have always lived in the moment, led by the wind and have surrounded ourselves with animals and nature. I have always been green even when it wasn't so trendy. The earth was always super important to me even as a young child. I am in to home remedies (past down by my grandmother.)

My mother will not talk about my father. My father didn't know where his mother came from to my knowledge. My grandmother will not give my any information either.. WTH?? When I asked her about her heritage she said that she was taught to never speak about it. That here people always thought her family was strange. I THINK IT'S WONDERFUL AND WANT TO LEARN MORE!!

Anyway, I am wanting to now how and where to start out trying to "tap into my roots." If you have any advice I am listening =)

    Many thanks!
