I am currently in the process of migrating the content shared here to a series of new websites hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com.

As you explore this site, you may find links to a "page not found" instead of something cool and magickal. For this I apologize. I am very working hard behind the scenes to restore those pages along with a link to their homes on my new website where they can be viewed in full.

Warding Off Poverty

The Greeks had a celebration called the Diasia to ward off poverty each year on March 14th. In a time (and when isn't there such a time?) of economic uncertainty, it is up to each person to do what they can to keep his or her life in a positive, prosperous mode. Sometimes circumstances, for whatever reason, have landed us in financial straits. There are certain practical things we can do to improve the situation and eventually eliminate the lack in our lives.

The very first thing is to become financially responsible. I think we all know the basics:
  • Check your monthly expenses; eliminate the non-essentials.
  • If you have a bad habit of charging purchases only to find yourself struggling to meet the payments, stop immediately!
  • Don't carry credit cards with you.
  • If the situation has gotten really bad, see a credit counselor.
  • Make a budget and stick to it.
Begin a habit of tucking away a little cash each payday. This money is your investment in your future and your dreams - it's an investment in you. Make a special money jar, or box, and each payday make a contribution - it doesn't have to be much. Even a few pennies will do. Add a pinch of cinnamon. And think about how money begets money, and how grateful you are for this "seed" money. Periodically count it, love and appreciate it, and think about how much fun it will be when there's more.
