Spell for the Solar Eclipse

Today, we have a total solar eclipse that occurs over Southeast Asia and the western Pacific. This will be the longest eclipse of the twenty-first century, with totality occurring for 6 minutes and 39 seconds. Today is a prime time for magic, as eclipses are rare and wondrous events. Some see the eclipse as a time when the Sun god and the Moon goddess are embracing. It’s a great opportunity to work with the balance of masculine and feminine energies.

Even if you live in a part of the world where the Moon’s shadow doesn’t fall during this eclipse, you can still work magic for new opportunities and to bring change into your life. Light a white candle for the Sun god and a black one for the Moon goddess. Then repeat the verse:

As the Sun god and Moon goddess embrace today,
May new opportunities start to come my way,
During this eclipse, the Moon’s shadow is cast on the Earth,
Ushering in a time of balance, magic, and re-birth.

Allow the spell candles to burn out in a safe place.

Solar and Lunar Eclipses in Magick

Working magic during an eclipse is considered "advanced." This is certainly not because you have to have a certain "degree" or be "all powerful!" It simply means that in order to understand the energy of an eclipse, you must understand the energy of time and the seasons. You must also be able to raise and focus energy within a limited amount of time.

Some people may sense a time of stillness, or hesitation during an eclipse . . . like the tiny glitter of time before a pendulum swings back after having swung all the way in one direction. This is the essence of an eclipse, and is a similar sensation to that felt within a magic circle. Equinoxes provide us with a time "between the worlds," or a window through which we can work magic.

Magick and The Solar Eclipse

Throughout the year, the sun waxes and wanes. At the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year, the sun is only visible for a few short hours. Days become longer and at the Spring or Vernal Equinox, day and night are equal. At the Summer Solstice, the sun is visible for the longest period of time (the longest day of the year). Days start to become shorter and at the Autumnal Equinox, day and night are equal again. Finally, as the sun wanes, we are at the Winter Solstice again.

During a solar eclipse, we experience what might be called a "micro year". The sun is whole, then partially or completely hidden, and then visible again. Within just a few minutes, an energy similar to a complete cycle of solstices and equinoxes can be felt.

In addition to this somewhat seasonal energy, we are aware of the Moon's presence. Her shadow falls across the Earth as she appears between the Earth and the Sun. This adds the unification of solar and lunar energy, reinforcing the sense of wholeness, completion and cycles of a solar eclipse.

Consider this fact about solar eclipses: A solar eclipse can only occur during the day, on a new moon. This means that you are working with new moon energy (great for getting rid of things and letting go).

A solar eclipse does not have to be visible for you to work magic. You won't be able to see every eclipse unless you can travel all over the world easily! Simply look at charts and almanacs to find the exact time of the eclipse, and work your magic then.

Solar eclipses are perfect for some specific types of magick. Consider the solar eclipse of June 10/11, 2002. Because this eclipse was close to the Solstice, the energy of the Solstice dominated the beginning of the eclipse.

In the Northern Hemisphere of the world, the sun is waxing as we near the Summer Solstice (In the Southern Hemisphere, the sun is waning and the Winter Solstice is approaching.)

When an equinox occurs at the time of the waning year (from the Summer Solstice to Yule) it is a good time to rid yourself of unwanted energies, bad habits, unhealthy patterns of thinking and acting, negativity, and other baneful things in your life. You can work with both the new moon energy, and the waning year energy, in addition to the energy of the eclipse.

Here's an example:

Your ex-lover caused you a lot of pain. Whenever your new love gets close to you, you push away to prevent getting hurt again. You realize that you cannot fully love this new person until you let your guard down. About a half hour before the eclipse begins, you work to let go of the old pattern of pushing away. As the eclipse begins, you feel the pattern dissolving. As the eclipse is ending, you reinforce the growth between you and your new love, and the growing trust within you. This waning/waxing type of magic works well with eclipses.

Consider the time of year the solar eclipse will occur during. Is the sun waxing or waning? Next, consider the lunar influence, the moon is new and will be waxing in a day or two. Finally, consider the waning/waxing energy of the solar eclipse. Use this information to develop your own, tailor-made spells, rituals and rites.

Magick and The Lunar Eclipse

Throughout the Moon's monthly cycle, (a.k.a. synodic period of exactly 29.530587 days) the moon waxes and wanes. At the New Moon, the moon is completely invisible. A crescent begins to appear as the moon waxes and finally becomes full. Finally the moon wanes and eventually goes back to the New Moon state. See the Moon Magic article for more information on the energy of phases of the moon.

During a lunar eclipse, we experience what might be called a "micro month". The moon is full, then partially or completely hidden, and then visible again. Within just a few minutes, an energy similar to a complete cycle of full, waning, new/black (if it is a total lunar eclipse), waxing and full again.

In addition to this cyclical energy, we are aware of the Earth's presence. Her shadow falls across the Moon as she appears between the Moon and the Sun. This adds the unification of earth and lunar energy, reinforcing the sense of wholeness, completion and cycles of a lunar eclipse. Because both the Earth and the Moon are considered "feminine," it is a good time to focus on the Goddess aspect if you desire.

Consider this fact about lunar eclipses: A lunar eclipse can only occur during the night of a full moon. This means you will be working with full moon energy.

A lunar eclipse does not have to be visible for you to work magic. You won't be able to see every eclipse unless you can travel all over the world easily! Simply look at charts and almanacs to find the exact time of the eclipse, and work your magic then.

A good example of magic to perform during a lunar eclipse would be to work on your psychic skills. As the moon wanes during the eclipse, you could focus on ridding yourself of blocks. As it waxes back to full, you could focus on increasing your psychic skills.

Consider the energy of the Full Moon, of the energy of the Moon going through all of Her cycles in just a few minutes, and consider the energy of the Earth's shadow on the Moon's face. Use this information to develop your own, tailor-made spells, rituals and rites.

Healing the Earth

To send out positive "healing" vibrations to the planet, perform this spell during an eclipse or when the Moon is in a waxing phase. Arrange seashells on a secluded beach to form a magic circle at least five feet in diameter.(If you do not have access to a beach, you may perform this spell in a forest or secluded garden using stones, branches and/or flowers to form the circle.)

Kneel in the center of the circle, facing the ocean.

Light a blue candle and a stick of incense and place them before you. Raise your arms high with palms up, and recite the following chant, three times, increasing your power and emotion each time:

With smoke and flame This spell's begun.
O Goddess of the stars,
Moon and the Sun,
Let the healing power begin.
Let the Earth be whole again.
The earth is my Mother
And I am Her child.
The Earth is my lover
Free and wild.
Heal on the outside; Heal within,
Land and sea, fire and wind.
With love sincere I chant this prayer
To make mankind begin to care.
Let every sister and every brother
Heal the wounds of the Great Earth Mother.
Let the healing power begin,
Let the Earth be whole again.
Heal on the outside; Heal within,
Land and sea, fire and wind.
SO MOTE IT BE!

And it is done.

Spell for Release of Pain

This is to be done on a rainy night outdoors.

Stand in the rain and let it touch you - do not wear heavy clothing to protect yourself from it. Call the rain and draw it down harder. Cast no circle, lest the pain stay trapped within it.

When the downpour becomes heavy, begin. Say the incantation charged full of emotion and let it come from the heart.

"Rain, take the pain.
Rain, take the pain.
Rain, take the pain.
Rain, take the pain.
Rain, take the pain.
Rain, take the pain.
Rain, wash away my pain.
Cry for me and take away my tears.
Rain, wash away my pain.
Cry for me and take away my fears."

Hold palms open to the sky and let the rain fill them. Wash your face and eyes with it. Repeat this three times:

"Let the tears fall, with the water,
into the earth, into the rock."

Let the pain go, release the energy. Let it wash away. Imagine it leaving you and entering the earth bound by rock.

Sky Divination

Go outside at night when the sky is clear. Ask a question. If the stars seem to glow brighter, or if a shooting star races across the sky, the answer is yes. If nothing seems to occur after fifteen minutes, or if clouds blot out the stars, the response in no.

Before going to bed, walk outside, look up at the sky and say the following: "Stars, stars, show me the future." It will appear in a dream that night.

Wishing on a star is a popular practice. Outside, look at at one particular star for several minutes. State your hoped-for future. Close your eyes for three seconds. If, upon opening your eyes, they immediately fix on the same star, your future is as you wished. If you can't find it at once, your future will be different.
